Congress lawmaker Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury was among the Opposition MPs who staged a walkout from the Lok Sabha on Thursday as Prime Minister Narendra Modi was replying to a debate on the no-confidence motion. “I had to (walkout) because even today the PM remained 'Nirav' (silent) on the issue of Manipur,” Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said.

Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, who was suspended from Lok Sabha today, took a jibe at PM Modi by making reference to fugitive diamantaire Nirav Modi and Dhritarashtra, the father of the Kauravas in the Mahabharata.

“I didn’t mean to disrespect PM. I gave it as an example. Nirav Modi is living a life outside the country after looting. I see a Nirav Modi born inside you (PM Modi). I meant you are ‘Nirav’, i.e. silent, on Manipur. So, I thought what is the use of seeing the new 'Nirav Modi',” Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said as he clarified his remark.

Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury questioned, "PM Modi says the whole country is with him, but why is he afraid of Congress..."

He accused the BJP of playing “majority politics”. “See the number of abuses given every day, pull out records, (abuses against) Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi...I didn’t say a wrong word,” Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said.

He added, "Whatever punishment is given, I’ll accept it if I’ve done any injustice. I want the country to watch what I said, to watch my attitude. If you think I’ve done injustice, then see the records.”

Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury was suspended from Lok Sabha on Thursday after Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi moved a resolution for the Congress leader’s suspension, saying he disturbs the House whenever Prime Minister Narendra Modi and ministers speak or a debate is going on.
