The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has questioned the brother of the Nationalist Congress Party's (NCP) leader Jayant Patil in connection with a VAT-related case on account of several suspicious transactions from accounts at a bank in Maharashtra's Sangli.

Patil's brother is a hotelier and he was examined regarding transactions with the Pune-based company. On Sunday, Patil revealed his brother had been summoned and interrogated by the ED four days ago.

The questioning, as per sources, was related to transactions from accounts at the Rajaram Bapu Sahkari Bank and is linked to a top entity with operations in Pune and Sangli.

In June, the ED carried out searches across 16 locations in Sangli, including at the premises of the cooperative bank, Rajarambapu Sahakari Bank Limited, as part of its probe related to alleged dubious sales tax refunds.

Several accounts from the cooperative bank were used for the purpose of deposits and withdrawals by the firms under the radar. The alleged transactions took place over a decade ago and police cases were also reported in the matter. The proceeds of VAT refunds were said to be over Rs 1000 crore.

Former Maharashtra minister Jayant Patil, in May, was called by the ED to record his statement in a money laundering case connected to the debt-hit Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services Limited (IL&FS) Group companies. IL&FS was earlier embroiled in a payment crisis and filed for bankruptcy in 2018.

The ED then initiated fresh action after it had searched the Mumbai offices of the two former auditors of IL&FS – Deloitte Haskins and Sells and BSR and Associates.
