Himanta Biswa Sharma on Northeast elections, Congress, his political ambitions and more

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, in an exclusive interview with India Today on Sunday, said the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would never accede to the demand for a separate state for tribals in Tripura as it would open a Pandora's box, trigging similar demands in other northeast states.

On being asked if he would consider a post-poll alliance with the Tripa Motha Party, CM Himanta said the BJP has no problem working with Tripa Motha, given Pradyot DebBarma’s party shed the demand for greater Tripura land.

The chief minister said the BJP has invoked peace in the region after a long time and could not push the northeastern states into a new mess.

When asked about the best and worst case scenario in the Assembly polls of Tripura, Nagaland and Meghalaya, Himanta said in Meghalaya and Nagaland, the BJP will get stronger and would be part of the government.
