Key panel to guide NCERT syllabus includes Sudha Murthy, Shankar Mahadevan

Stalwarts such as acclaimed singer Shankar Mahadevan known for many musical contributions to India, and Sudha Murthy, Infosys Chairman Narayana Murthy’s wife, the mother-in-law of the United Kingdom’s Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and the chairperson of Infosys Foundation, are going to be part of a key panel constituted to finalise textbooks and learning materials for Classes 3 to 12 in India under the National Education Policy.

This high-powered National Syllabus and Teaching Learning Material Committee (NSTC) is going to be empowered to develop the school syllabus for Classes 3 to 12 and revise the existing textbooks of Classes 1 to 2 to ensure a smooth transition from Class 2 to Class 3, according to a notification issued by the National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT).

The committee is going to be chaired by Mahesh Chandra Pant, the chancellor of the National Institute of Education and Planning in Administration, and co-chaired by Professor Manjul Bhargava from Princeton University.

The committee will also consist of Bibek Debroy -- Chairman, EAC, PM PM, Dr Shekhar Mandey -- the former director general of CSIR, as well as Sanjeev Sanyal -- a member of the EAC Prime Minister's office.

Other members include Professor Sujatha Ramadorai, from the University of British Columbia, in Canada, U Vimal Kumar, Director of Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy, Bengaluru, Professor Michael Danino, a visiting professor at IIT Gandhinagar, Surina Ranjan IAS, retired from the Haryana cadre and former DG, HIPA, Chamu Krishna Shastri, Chairperson of the Bharatiya Bhasha Samiti, Dr MD Srinivas, Chairman, Centre for Policy Studies, Chennai, Gajanan Londhe, Head of Programme Office, NSTC, Rabin Chhetri, Director, SCERT Sikkim, Professor Pratyusha Kumar Mandal, NCERT, Professor Dinesh Kumar, NCERT, Professor Kirti Kapoor, NCERT, and Professor Ranjana Arora, NCERT.

The notification from NCERT says that the textbooks will cover curricular areas and subjects within the National Curriculum Framework and also support materials like the teacher's handbooks.

The NSTC will be free to invite other experts for advice, consultation and support as and when required. The NSTC will be assisted by the programme office set up by the NCERT, which will also give them all the required expertise and support that is required.

NCERT Chairperson Professor Dinesh Prasad Saklani said that each member will have a role to play within the panel which has been enumerated in the circular in detail about the kind of support they will provide to the national curriculum framework.

"Every individual is an established person in their own field. The endeavour will be to work in a time-bound manner to bring out these textbooks within the next one year," he said.
