Lunar showdown: Will Russia's Luna-25 beat Chandrayaan-3 to the Moon?

The Luna-25 spacecraft, Russia's first lunar landing craft in nearly five decades, is set to launch on August 11 from the Vostochny cosmodrome, located in the far east of Moscow.

This launch comes after a delay of nearly two years from its originally planned date in October 2021. The Luna-25 mission aims to study the composition of the polar regolith and the plasma and dust components of the lunar polar exosphere.

This launch is happening in close proximity to the Chandrayaan-3 mission, which was launched four weeks prior and is set to touch down at the lunar south pole on August 23.

The Russian space agency, Roscosmos, has outlined an ambitious timeline for its Luna-25 spacecraft, suggesting that Russia could potentially match or narrowly surpass Chandrayaan-3's lunar touchdown. This has led to a perceived race between the two nations to reach the moon's south pole.
