As the Opposition tried to corner the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party-led government in Parliament over the Manipur video incident and the crimes against women, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman invoked a 1989 incident involving former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and AIADMK chief J Jayalalithaa.

In response to Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leader Kanimozhi's remarks on crimes against women, Nirmala Sitharaman said, “About women, stripping women, demeaning women, and shaming women, all of us will have to feel really very serious. Women suffering anywhere, Manipur, Delhi, or Rajasthan, we will have to take it seriously, (and there should be) no politics played on it.”

Speaking in Parliament during the no-confidence motion, Nirmala Sitharaman recounted the incident that took place on March 25, 1989, when Jayalalithaa’s saree was pulled in the Tamil Nadu Assembly.

“Then she (Jayalalithaa) had not become the Chief Minister, but she was a Leader of the Opposition. Jayalalithaa's saree was pulled in the Tamil Nadu Assembly. She was a leader of Opposition and the DMK members who were seated there, heckled her and laughed at her,” Nirmala Sitharaman said.

Hitting out at the DMK, which is part of the Opposition bloc, Nirmala Sitharaman said, "You are talking about Kaurava Sabha, you are talking about Droupadi. Has DMK forgotten Jayalalithaa? You pulled her saree, you demeaned her.”

Union minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s remark came during the debate on the no-confidence motion brought against the Narendra Modi government by the opposition in Lok Sabha.
