Nothing Ear (2) Black offers the same great sound with a fresh coat of paint

Lately, the world has been buzzing about Nothing. And no, I am not talking about nothing, I am talking about, “Nothing”, the tech brand founded by Carl Pei. Recently, the company introduced the successor to the Phone (1), dubbed — Nothing Phone (2). But, that’s not all, as the company also introduced a new colour to its flagship TWS earbuds — Nothing Ear (2). The Ear (2)’s are now available in a new black colour, and just as the headline says, the new TWS earbuds offer the same great sound but with a fresh coat of paint. But, beyond the striking new colour option, Nothing has also made significant improvements to the accompanying Nothing X app, enhancing the overall user experience.

Nothing Ear (2) Black: What’s new?

Priced at Rs 9,999, the Nothing Ear (2) Black comes at a slight premium compared to its white counterpart, with a price difference of Rs 1,000. And why do I say this? Because, while the black Ear (2)’s have launched at the same price as the white ones, the latter itself is currently selling for Rs 8,999 online.

So, just like Nothing did with the Ear (1)’s, first launching the earbuds in white and then later in black. The same formula has been followed with the Nothing Ear (2) as well. However, this upgrade is more than just a change in hue. You see, the black colourway offers a compelling alternative to the striking white design, allowing users to embrace a more discreet and refined look while enjoying the same great features that make Ear (2) a true standout in the market.

Now, beyond the striking new colour option for the Nothing Ear (2), the company has also made significant improvements to the accompanying Nothing X app, enhancing the overall user experience. One notable enhancement is the advanced equalizer settings, which now allow for precision tuning. With these advanced controls, users can personalize their sound profile to suit their unique preferences, ensuring an immersive audio experience tailored precisely to their liking.

Up until now, with the Nothing X app, the equalizer had a straightforward setup with four different modes — Balanced, More Bass, More Treble and Voice. Of course, you could also do a custom setup, but it was nowhere as tight as what you are getting right now.

So, with the Advanced equalizer in the Nothing X app, you can now create multiple profiles, each tailored for specific genres or moods. The updated Nothing app now offers a graphical interface that allows users to fine-tune the frequencies to their liking. Additionally, you can also adjust the Frequency and Q factor to tweak the audio signature a little bit more. So, whether you're indulging in a bass-heavy hip-hop track or immersing yourself in the ethereal melodies of classical music, or if you are someone like me, who likes reverb-dominated Bollywood music, you can save your preferred sound settings as unique profiles. And here's the cherry on top – you can share these profiles with your friends and fellow audio enthusiasts via QR codes.

Also note, as of right now, the advanced equaliser in the Nothing X app is only available for the Nothing Ear (2) and the Nothing Ear Stick. The latter has also received a noise reduction feature that can be accessed through the Nothing X app.

Nothing Ear (2): My experience

Now, it is not just the Nothing Ear (2) Black, but the white TWS earbuds that I have already been rocking — I have been rigorously using these earbuds as my daily driver for listening to a lot of music. In my opinion, if you decide to get the Nothing Ear (2), you can rest assured this will not disappoint you. Overall, what you get here is a good frequency response across different music genres and a bright soundstage. The overall bass response is tight and crisp. In fact, the personal sound feature is a great addition to have for an optimal listening experience. Apart from this, Nothing Ear (2) absolutely shines in producing the mids and high tones. Even when I was playing tracks at full volume, the sound was never screechy.

To sum up, the sound output of the Nothing Ear (2) has been rich and detailed with good instrument separation from day 1 of using the white earbuds. With the black earbuds, I have only been spoilt with a new colour option and, of course, the advanced EQ settings. Because, while everything, from the sound quality to the decent ANC, to the price made the Nothing Ear (2) a compelling package. The new colour option and the new features only make it a more complete package, both in terms of form as well as function.
