Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin slams BJP over IPC, CrPC renaming

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin has reignited the language imposition row, accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of imposing Hindi on non-Hindi speaking states. The DMK leader's accusations come in response to the BJP-led Union government's move to overhaul the country's criminal laws by replacing colonial-era laws with new ones bearing Hindi names.

Stalin, who has been a vocal critic of the BJP's alleged 'Hindi imposition', has termed the renaming of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), and the Indian Evidence Act as unconstitutional and an attempt to tamper with India's diversity. He has further accused the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi of linguistic imperialism.

The Home Minister, Amit Shah, introduced three bills in Parliament on August 12 and said the Indian Penal Code (IPC), 1860, Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), 1898, and the Indian Evidence Act, 1872, will be replaced by the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Bill, 2023, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) Bill, 2023, and Bharatiya Sakshya (BS) Bill, 2023, respectively, once these are cleared by the Parliament.
