In a case of honour killing, a 17-year-old girl was killed by her maternal uncle after she insisted on getting married to a man who lived in his neighbourhood in Uttar Pradesh's Azamgarh.

"On Friday, around 6 pm, we received information that Mohammed Veerendra Rajbhar killed his niece by slitting her throat with a knife. The girl was adamant about marrying her lover, who lived in the neighbourhood and was at odds with her uncle," police said.

The accused had been trying to convince her, but she refused to listen and, in a fit of rage, he killed her. He then tried to flee the spot but was caught by the villagers who beat him up and later handed him over to the police.

Police arrested the accused and also seized the knife used in the crime. The accused will be presented in court for remand within the next 10 days.

Investigation revealed that the girl had lost her father 15 years ago, and ever since her uncle had been looking after her family. The girl had been in a relationship with a man and had even fled with her lover in the past, after which a case was registered. She wanted to marry him but the family did not approve of their marriage, police said.

On Friday, the accused came to his niece's house to discuss the matter during which an argument broke out. Soon it turned violent and, in a fit of rage, he killed her.
