The driver, Rahul Tapkir, was drunk at the time of the accident, said the police. He rammed into the boy and his mother while they were on their scooter.

Both of them were rushed to the hospital. However, the boy succumbed to his injuries. The mother has sustained serious injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment.

The police have detained Rahul Tapkir, 40, as the prime suspect in this case.

A senior police officer said that the woman and her child were struck from behind by the car at Pune's Charoli Phata.

The force of the impact caused the child to go under the vehicle, resulting in the dragging incident, he added.

The police are currently investigating the matter.
